AR GYFER HEDDIW'R BORE A horribly crude parody of a pronunciation guide * F is pronounced V * FF is F * DD is voiced TH (dh) as in this * TH is unvoiced TH as in think * CH is kh as in loch * J is j as in jam * R is rolled * O is as in hot (also sometimes as in thought), NOT as in hotel * W is w or oo * I or U is ee/ih * Y is sometimes "ee/ih", sometimes "uh" as in 2nd syllable of sofa (in words like y, yn, yr) * AE or AI is the vowel of high or rye * EI is somewhere between the vowel of hay and high * EW is e of bet plus oo of boot, but in one syllable * IW is ee plus oo in one syllable like "eew!" * WY in "wyt" and "glwyfau" is OOee, like fluid, NOT wee IMPORTANT TIPS FOR SOUNDING CONVINCING: * Sounds are always pronounced the same wherever they are in the word, unlike English, so "faban" is VAban (two a's sounding the same) not VABuhn. * Always roll your r's. Every time. Otherwise you'll just sound Cornish. REMEMBER: You are MUCH better off learning how the Welsh spelling works, as above (it's not complicated) than relying on some naff English-based transcription. English just isn't capable of transcribing foreign sounds clearly and unambiguously. How would you write "mewn" in Engilsh? How would you make the distinction between Welsh "dd" and Welsh "th"? You start to find your transcription itself needs a transcription. Soon you realise there's no magic bullet and it's more trouble than it's worth. Having said that, if you really want it, here's my best attempt -- but make sure you understand how to pronouce the transcription! 1.
