Deep drop
English 18th-century West Gallery carol (a.k.a. “Mount Zion”, “Providence”, “St Albans” and “Christmas”) in an American shapenote arrangement with alto by David Wright, from the American Christmas Harp. Christmas words from John Morison's Translations and Paraphrases, 1781. The tune is attributed to the Canterbury shoemaker Thomas Clark (1805), who wrote the tune "Cranbrook", better known by the parody words "On Ilkla Moor bah t'hat".
New non-Xmas lyrics by Samuel Stennett added May 2013 from Rippon's Selection so we can use the song at any time of year!
TIPS: loud, vigorous, rhythmic style; don't hang about at the end of the first half of the tune; at end of last verse, repeat second half ("Justice shall crown his throne above…"/"There rocks and hills and brooks and vales…").

LYRICS (Non-Xmas version)
On Jordan's stormy banks I stand,
And cast a wishful eye To Canaan's fair and happy land, Where my possessions lie. Oh the transporting, rapturous scene, That rises to my sight! Sweet fields arrayed in living green, And rivers of delight! There generous fruits that never fail, On trees immortal grow; There rocks and hills, and brooks and vales, With milk and honey flow. |
